This is abnormal heart rhythm which could be slower than the usual or faster hence disrupting the flow of blood from the heart.
Presentation
Palpitations, getting short of breath, feeling faint or dizzy are common symptoms amongst others.
Common types of Arrhythmias include: Atrial fibrillation: This involves the heart beating really fast and irregularly.
Supraventricular tachycardia: Intermittent episodes of the heart beating really fast.
Ventricular fibrillation: This is a rare, rapid and disorganised rhythm of heartbeats that rapidly leads to loss of consciousness and sudden death if not treated immediately.
Bradycardia: This is common and occurs when the heart beats very slowly. Most times it could be normal especially if you are very athletic but it could be a problem if you have symptoms.
Self-help tips
Caffeine intake could cause arrhythmia
Smoking, illegal drugs like cannabis could also cause it.
Weight loss would help tremendously
Reducing or stopping alcohol intake
Treatment
This depends on the cause; some could require medications, cardioversion to reset the heart rhythm, IUCD and pacemakers if permanent.
