Causes difficulty in swallowing which gradually gets worse. This is caused by failure of the oesophagus to contract properly thus limiting the passage of food and drinks down to the stomach.
For most people there is no symptoms
For others it could include
Regurgitation/ bringing back undigested food.
Symptoms of achalasia
It could lead to cancer hence the need for further investigations and treatment.
There is no cure for achalasia, but treatment can help relieve the symptoms and make swallowing easier.
Symptomatic management with medications, botox
surgery - under general anaesthetic, the muscle fibres in the ring of muscle that lets food into your stomach are cut.
